Our Journey
in transport and logistics.
2012 was an important year in many ways. It was Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee and the UK was hosting the Olympics. But, more importantly, it was the year Martin James Dobson (Tipper Transport Services) started — not a very original name, granted, but what did I know!!
After leaving school, I trained as an HGV mechanic and did that until I could pass my Class 1 HGV test. I then spent most of my driving career delivering concrete (working for my Dad for the first 11 years).
At the start of 2012, an opportunity came up to buy a second-hand 8-wheel tipper from a local haulier who was retiring from the industry. After getting some advice from Malcolm (my Dad, who still to this day is my mentor), I borrowed some money, applied for an operator’s licence, found somewhere to park, and went ahead and purchased my first tipper — a 2003 8x4 Foden Alpha (many locals still recall that truck in the area). Lenny, who I bought the truck from, also gave me some contacts to help get work coming in.
The first year was hard as we were coming out of a recession, but hard work and dedication paid off. I built contacts and relationships within the industry, many of which I still work with today. After two years of working by myself, things were getting busier, so I purchased a second truck and took on my first employee. Things grew steadily over the years, adding extra vehicles to meet the demand of the workload.
